I once had a garden long before having a backyard garden was cool. There’s a unique satisfaction when you can walk a few feet and snip off your dinner salad lettuce leaves. Like many a career, a kid, and a move ended my little garden projects. Until now!
Retirement enabled me to again enjoy the fruits of a garden. How many plants does it take to call it a garden? Since we’re still trying to finish the house to live it, the “garden” is just 3 tomato plants. That’s a 3x increase from last years 1 surviving tomato plant. It’s all about progress and baby steps around here.
I picked up 3 plants late this spring to populate the now flattened out garden space. I went with one patio / container sized plant and then just picked 2 larger plants. A lofty goal is to make batches of sauce in my new yet not usable kitchen in my new not livable shouse.

This is my grape tomato plant. It’ll be producing a bounty and what we’ve tasted so far, is so sweet and delicious right off the plant.

Speaking of fruit, the apples are also coming along. Unfortunately, like last year, some bug or worm is eating them. I can only hope there’s enough good fruit for a pot of apple sauce. Last years applesauce turned out very nice. I’m determined that this will be the last year those invaders commandeer my apples.

I’ve learned that Neem oil seems to be a good choice to control fruit eating bugs and I’m open to learning of more options that’ll help next years harvest.
We also have pears this year. Last year there was a late spring frost suppressed all the pear trees from budding.

Neighborly Love
Enough about my lackluster garden produce, here’s what I love about our new area. Neighbors and friends sharing their bounty. The next town over is known for their watermelons. I can vouch for this big melon’s tastiness. I’ve been gifted a few zucchini which is making it into grilled chicken and vegetable bowls.

How about those cute yellow plums. I can eat a dozen in one sitting. Wish I was set up for canning. My neighbor has 3 trees overloaded with ripe fruit and she can’t use them all. Another thing to plan for next year is learn how to can some fruit. Or, perhaps plum wine making is in my future!

What a wonderful summer bounty of veggies, Cheryl! How nice your neighbors like to share theirs, too. Hope your summer is going well!
