This Week’s Photography Challenge

The theme this week is bugs. The challenge was to photograph summer bugs. First up is our find while backpacking. We returned yesterday after 4 days in the back country with too many encounters to count, namely flies and mosquitos. Needless to say these are not odd, fun or colorful so, I focused on swatting them not shooting them.

The Fun

Then we ran into crickets. Sitting next to Rainbow Lake in Montana, these grasshoppers were quite entertaining. Jumping everywhere, bathing in the spring water or sun bathing. There were numerous around and when several would hop it was like watching jumping beans!

Another bug that’s fun and very colorful is our Iridescent Fig Beatles. They love to pile onto a ripe fig like a football team tackling the football.

Colorful

Besides our colorful fig Beatles, we do find lots of color on the road with butterflies.

The Odd

We seemed to be surrounded by odd especially critters like caterpillars.

My Favorite Bug Resident

We periodically find a praying mantis in the yard. This particular year we found this one several times in the front courtyard.

I like how it appears he’s talking to his shadow.

Most bugs, or I should say crawling bugs, are not my friends but when the praying mantis visits, I have no problem rolling out the welcome mat.

About the Challenge

I stumbled across a weekly photo challenge and have participated for a few weeks now. Sunday Stills hosted by Terri on her blog, SecondWindLeisure blog, is where I found the challenge. I’ll endeavor to capture a fresh image that fits the theme and also share a few photos from our archives. For me, the photos all tie back to memories of our life and travels together. Hope you find them interesting and enjoyable. Enjoy Terri’s post “What’s Bugging You?”
