Feed the birds or is it feeding my curiosity. Our Sunday stills photo theme is feeding the birds. It’s a theme that reminds me of the many visits with a toddler to the nearby lake to feed the ducks bread scraps. The toddler is grown, bread scraps is a no-no and I;ve moved away from that lake. Fortunately, in our travels we have many lakes and rivers to make our home for a few days through out the year.
Beyond lakes and rivers we also have the ocean and one of our favorite areas to stay is on the Gulf of Mexico. On the Gulf of Mexico we encountered a few pelicans, keenly guarding their catch. Padre Island National Seashore is a great park to visit either by car or bring the RV and camp on the beach! It’s been 3 years since we’ve made it down to Corpus Cristi, TX. Fingers crossed that are plans allow us time to return this spring before the humidity becomes unbearable.

Another pelican is keenly keeping an eye out. Mostly he’s watching the local fishermen and checking out their catch.

All Shapes and Sizes
From turkeys to blue jays, we’ve encountered quite a variety on our road trips and hikes. Some even stand still long enough to focus on and snap a picture.

Notable Winged Creatures
This hawk was quite spectacular to learn about her training and hunting skills. The handler was quite the bird man.

Bald eagles are always a delight to spot. Usually my zoom doesn’t have enough reach but we spotted a few young eagles as we kayaked on the Snake River in Montana’s Grand Teton National Park. Not the best picture, but it’s a great memory of that kayak trip. We saw more wildlife kayaking this section of river than we have on any other float.

Get Off My Rock
Someone’s getting squawked at. On our recent California Coast trip we meandered through 17-Mile Drive in Monterey. As you can imagine the seagulls were plentiful and humorous.

Colorful Birds Brighten Raining Day
Always a treat when we stumble into an area with unexpected colorful birds. Along the Logan River in Utah on a rainy weekend, these winged creatures entertained us as they hunted for their meals.

Such a great collection of beautiful birds. The ones that I’m most familiar with are the pelicans and the gulls. We have a nesting pair of red-tail hawks in our area and it’s always thrilling to see them play on the thermals together.

Oohh, I love watching our hawks here as well. They like to hunt in the nearby orchards so I catch them quite often on my daily walks.

You have a nice variety of birds here, Cheryl! I adore shorebirds like gulls and pelicans! Your trip to Padre Island reminds me that is a winter trip we would love to take some time. The windsurfing there in January-February is quite amazing–even I would try it again there.

It’d be a lovely winter trip. We spent a Christmas week there and a New Years week in San Antonio. First time in San Antonio and it was a pretty interesting place to visit and explore.
