I still remember the first time I visited a real urban city. It was of course THE big city called New York City. Feeling the pulse of the city as you walk through Time Square, Central Park, and Wall Street for the first time is something I’ll never forget. Since then I’ve been back a few more times to New York, and have tackled trips to Seattle, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Tokyo, and Taipei.
Although most trips were work related the discovery of each urban area was both enthralling and eye opening to this suburban gal.
I definitely enjoy visiting urban areas for their unique set of history, sites, and art to take in. However, having always been in suburbia and now transplanting myself to a very small rural place, I know I’ll never adopt an urban lifestyle. Do you prefer the big city life to the suburban sprawl? I don’t. The energy is humming but I am always looking for my solitude.
Even though there’s a big difference in crowds, noise, and even culture between an urban life and a rural (or even suburban life), I have found a few similarities. Let me know if you agree with these and what other similarities you have found.
View for Miles
Which view do you prefer?
- The dramatic big city skyline
- The river carved mountain range
Directions are Provided
We humans still need guidance to get from A to B whether it’s on the highway or on a trail.
Roads, Trails, Paths That Take Us Everywhere
Unless you’re bush-whacking, we humans also prefer to drive on a road. It can be a forest gravel road sans pot holes to a nice paved street. Both will get us where we desire to be.
Going Up or Down?
Stairs or steps help move people up and down so we can get where we need to go! Admittedly I never needed hiking poles unless I’m in really rough terrain.
The Closet
At least the port-a potty continues to live on. All though it’s been modernized for better comfort and cleanliness they are very recognizable no matter where they show up.
More
With my big city visits being so long ago and my old photo arhive not accessible, I’m unable to share many urban images. That is also a good thing as I’m sure they are poor photos and some may have been from a small cannon film camera for all I can recollect. However, I did locate a few other urban to small walkable town photos to share.
Architecture and city planning has an enormous impact on patterns of life in the city. Yes we form the cities but then the cities form us.

I’m with you. I could never adapt to urban living. I’ll visit and enjoy it very much, but I love small town living and I prefer mountain views over city ones

I just found your comment Kirstin. For some reason wordpress stuck your 2 recent comments in my spam 😦 . Hope that hasn’t to you with anyone else. I think I had a brief period in my life where I thought it’d be cool to never have to drive anywhere and have access to whatever I needed in a short train or subway ride. I must’ve been a enamored with the exciting pace back in my 30’s but the sanity prevailed and I know I live best in nature and quiet.

You have a beautiful collection of urban images in your gallery, Cheryl! I like what you did with the theme and creating contrasts between urban and nature. Sorry about not being able to access your old photos. I love seeing grand views of urban skylines, but I’ll walk through nature any day.
